The Vision

Mookyjooky and SaurianOverlord are heading up a project to create Sega Saturn game covers for slim-pak DVD cases.

The ultimate goal of the project is to provide a complete collection of matching, high-quality packages for the entire Saturn library to make available to the general public.

While we originally planned on sticking to one console at a time, the project is growing rapidly! Keep your eyes open; a PSX project may begin soon, followed by others! Watch the forums for details.

Special thanks to Racketboy for posting about this on his site. I'd never have found this project if not for him!

Check out the gallery or the "completed covers" forum thread (in progress).

About the Project

So, your question is, "Why?" Here are a few examples of the downsides of the original Saturn cases:

Conversely, the advantages of slim-paks include:

Furthermore, the proposed project will provide collectors with consistent, high-quality packaging for all of their Saturn games, including imports. They also give us an excellent low-cost option for backup copies. On top of all that, they look freaking great!

What Do I Need?

What we need you to do is to simply combine the scans and templates provided. All you need to participate is:

If you'd like to submit scans for the project, please read this post in the forum for details.

I Want to Help!

So, you want to give us a hand. Great!! Here's what do do:

  1. Download the template here (21.3 MB). Please note: The only real rule in this game is that you must adhere to the template. The covers need to be consistent, or the project is all for naught. At some point, Photoshop scripts (or something similar) will be available to change to a US or EUR layout, among other things.
  2. If you don't have Photoshop CS already, download the trial here.
  3. Get some cover images from any site you want. Keep in mind that the resolution will be low, and the scans may not be of sufficient quality. Better scans will be hosted here as i receive them. Post to this thread to request specific scans. Here are some other links to get you started:
  4. Create your cover! We encourage participants to be creative and quality-minded. We're looking for covers that show some artistic license. If your goal is to preserve the original cover as much as possible, that's fine, but please don't settle for bad scans or stretched images. Look at the ones that Mookyjooky has done if you need ideas on how to get around jewel-case covers (JPN games) not fitting the template.
  5. Save your cover as a "12 (Highest Quality)" JPEG and send it to us ONE of the following ways:
    • e-mail to Mookyjooky or SaurianOverlord with the subject Saturn DVD Cover (the subject line is important, please don't forget).
    • upload to saurianoverlord on MediaMax--you don't even need an account (if you use MediaMax, please put your files in archives tagged with your username so we know who you are; you may use .zip, .rar, .ace, or whatever you prefer.)
    • upload to the appropriate section of the gallery (max. total upload size is 50MB)

And that's it! Read on to find out what happens next...

The Good Stuff

Please note that the prize system is also under re-evaluation and may change. For example, if covers are made available, the 2-for-1 option would obviously be abandonned.

We'd like to think you'd be in this for the sheer enjoyment of it, but there are some perks.

When you finish a cover and send it to us, it will be listed here and made available as a preview in the gallery for all to see. Each cover you finish grants you access to two other finished ones of your choice; let us know which ones you want and they're yours!

Each week, the new covers will be judged. A "best of show" for the week will be chosen, and the winner will receive access to all of the new covers! You can be one of the first to have these fine pieces of work!

Finally, the grandaddy prize: On February 14th, 2007, the person who has uploaded the most covers will receive a MODDED SEGA SATURN, as well as a bunch of extra goodies, all graciously donated by Mookyjooky!
